Animation for sports events – This is how the animation of the 2020 European Water Polo Championship was made – Part 3

It was already mentioned in the very first versions of the project briefs that a simple, VJ-like loop would be needed. The basic concept was that during the opening ceremony there would be a dance performance, during which something should be seen on the walls, which is discreet, works well even in the dark, does not attract attention too much, but is still spectacular. This is how we started to make the series, which we finally put into practice under the name of show animation.

The concept of the show animation itself was to create a spectacular design that basically works in complete darkness, which is why it has a huge advantage over everything else: it can use the reflection of the giant water surface under the LED walls. The basic design was a 3d particle animation, which included the logo of the event. This idea was chosen because it made it possible for a large part of the panel to be constantly covered in darkness, and the few light particles can therefore get even more attention. This was also necessary because the LED walls tend to work as lamps in a dark space, and the view we designed worked well only with little light.

The show animation was originally supposed to be just one element of the opening and would not have returned later, but when the organizers saw it for the first time, they immediately made it a permanent part of the program. So in the end, the audience could see the design during the break of each game, and it served as a kind of suspense element that announced the soon-to-be-started game, and we also used it as a background during the evening concerts. In the end, the use of reflection was so successful that the angles for the TV broadcast were modified for the sake of animation.

The countdown is an element that we have made part of every event in recent years, regardless of the theme: every audience loves it. Our countdown to the EB is undoubtedly the most bombastic yet. Its function is to connect the standard event branding with the show animation. It was the other colleagues who made the countdown really effective, not us: the lighting technicians and the DJ of the event created a very effective environment for it, so when it started, 6 thousand people counted down loudly.

During the 2020, 34th LEN Water Polo European Championship, we created two weeks of animation for 9 LED walls in the Duna Arena. This series of articles covers this topic thoroughly. At the end of the fourth part, you will also see a big summary video about the animations, but if you want to watch it sooner, you can click here, you can click here.
